French @ WHCI
Welcome to the French department at West Humber C.I. Our French department offers French courses at all grade levels. Why study French? As stated in the Ontario Secondary Curriculum, knowledge of a second language is valuable for a number of reasons. Through learning a second language, students can strengthen their first-language skills and enhance their critical and creative thinking abilities; they also tend to become more tolerant and respectful of other cultures. In addition, the ability to communicate in another language provides students with a distinct advantage in a number of careers, both in Canada and internationally.
The Ministry of Education of Ontario states that all students must acquire a grade 9 French credit in order to receive their OSSD; however, they may choose to further their French education in the following years. That is to say, they may continue to take French courses in grade 10, 11 and 12. Such continuation of French after grade 9 is an excellent way for students to further enhance their French skills and become proficient in Canada's second official language.
Students who complete all French courses from grade 9 to grade 12 will receive a Core French certificate from the TDSB recognizing them as bilingual graduates. In turn, this will provide them with better opportunities for careers in the future.
