On October 31, 1966, a thousand students and teachers took their first steps into the most beautiful foyer of any school building in town. Ever since then, West Humber C. I. has expanded as a school building and an educational institution. For many years following the official opening, most of the school population came from the southern direction and crossed the creek to arrive at one of the best educational institutions in Etobicoke. Slowly, but surely, we found ourselves acquiring a school identity and school spirit. Later, as the neighbourhood developed more towards the north, the school population increased and more and more people coming from different cultures started to attend W.H.C.I.
The first year of West Humber C. I. was a challenge for all. The partnership in education between teachers and students started in the cafeteria of Thistletown Collegiate. Our first students and the staff, through genuine co-operation, sought to ignore the many problems associated with "the Shift System", while bending their wills and their energies to getting along with the job. Just as with the early Canadians, we were pioneers in a venture; pioneers assume there will be difficulties but, for those who win, the victories are the greater over obstacles that seem insurmountable to others.
Even in the first year, we rose to occasions such as the formation of our first Student’s Council, the contribution we made to the United Appeal, and a victory in at least one form of athletics, Cross-country. Also, and it is to the credit of both schools, at no time was there evidence of anything but the greatest of understandings between all of the people at Thistletown Collegiate and ourselves.
The school has continued to excel in sports, studies and many other extramural activities. We have always made excellent contributions to the community and to numerous not-for-profit organizations. We have had illustrious Canadians who attended our fine school including Wayne Gretzky and Shania Twain. That tradition of excellence continues! Today, West Humber C. I. is home to students originating from more than one hundred countries reflecting the great diversity of the city of Toronto. We continue to achieve our aims and establish meaningful traditions for those who follow in our educational footsteps.
A School Council acts in an advisory capacity to the school's principal and the school board's elected trustees. The council places the overall interests of the students and the school first. School Councils operate within the parameters of the Education Act.
Recognizing that when parents are interested and involved in their children's education, student achievement and attitude toward learning are often improved, the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training in cooperation with local school boards has mandated the establishment of advisory councils for every school in Ontario. The West Humber Collegiate School Council has a long history of active involvement in school issues. The primary role of the council is to maintain a link between the school and community, as well as to provide ideas and opinions to the principal and school board that reflect the views of the school community at large and are in the best interests of all students.
School Council meetings take place on a monthly basis after school hours and can be attended by any parent or guardian of a student attending West Humber C. I. A telephone message goes out to all parents and/or guardians indicating the exact dates. We welcome your participation!
The Chair of the West Humber C. I. School Council for the 2007-2008 school year is Hussan Abtidon.
